The Olympics is the biggest security operation France has held for any sporting or social event, and threats from crime, terrorism, and social unrest are a reality. To ensure the security of the Summer Olympic Games, an estimated 35,000 police officers and gendarmes will be deployed, and private security guards will supplement the system. However, private security is essential for some travelers and groups.
The Risk
The Summer Olympic Games are quickly approaching, and France will host both the Summer Olympics from July 26th to August 11th and the Paralympic Games from Wednesday, August 28th to September 8th.
The Games are estimated to bring 15 million visitors to Paris, and security will be left to the capacity of organizers, local authorities, and various service providers to respond to extraordinary safety and security challenges.
Crime and public disorder in France continue to increase, and violent crimes rose to 384,100 incidents in 2023, increasing 8% over 2022.* French public authorities struggle to manage violence and petty crime in their current state, and the increase in tourists during the Olympic Games will increase crime incidents exponentially.

The majority of Olympic events are spread across Paris, with the main athletic events at the Stade de France on the northern outskirts of Paris and 15 Olympic and 11 Paralympic venues will be in the city center.
To accommodate these events, there will be extensive traffic restrictions throughout the city, with several Metro and railway stations closed during the games.
